Whats a crazy crossover? It’s a mix of the last two games you played creating some sort of cool or crazy (or sometimes perfectly logical!) hybrid game or game mode.
Today’s crazy crossover is a combination of the last two games I have played: Resident Evil 2 remake and Spyro Reignited Trilogy (Spyro 1). Let’s start with a bit of background.
Resident Evil 2 (RE2) is a remake of the classic survival horror from 1998. It takes you on the story of Raccoon City and it’s exposure to the T-Virus. You follow Leon Kennedy throughout the nightmare and try to survive with limited resources and many intense moments.
Spyro Reignited trilogy (Spyro 1). Unless you have been living under a rock for most of your life I shouldn’t have to explain what this game is. Either way Spyro is a young dragon who is tasked with saving his world. The gameplay centres around multiple Dragon hub worlds that you have to explore finding smaller linear levels. The unique aspect to this platformer is within the flight of Spyro. Taking to the skies rather than the jump and double jump format that genre had followed for so long.
So what happens when you cross over these two very different games? I am going to focus on the format of the game being a survival horror but with a story that mixes the two games together.
I think the gameplay elements in Spyro are too unique to not include so I would use this as the base game. You could still have the hub worlds with linear gameplay centered around finding and freeing your fellow dragon kind.
Instead of cute and cuddly enemies in your path you would have mutated wildlife infected with the T-Virus to deal with. The most important feature I think would have to be tension and unpredictability. This is where the brilliance of the remake of Resident Evil 2 can be brought in.
There is a character called MR.X in RE2, which after reaching a certain point you unleash this unstoppable force. MR.X cannot be stopped or hurt and has very complex AI to follow you throughout your journey in the remainder of the game.
Whilst trying to complete even the most mundane of tasks, you are haunted by the knowledge that he can literally be anywhere at any time.
Imagine if you will; instead of MR.X, a mutated dragon stalking you throughout the hub worlds and the linear levels you fly to. Boss levels could still be implemented and if anything, have more freedom as you could create literally anything from the current Spyro game and jackson pollock it until it’s a deformed and horrifying husk of it’s former self.
The game could keep the puzzle solving from RE2 and platforming from Spyro by combining the two. Use platforming to solve your puzzles. Similarly to how Portal and Portal 2 operate. Did I just break the rules by including a third game? I suppose you can decide on that.
So that’s my take on a crazy crossover. A Survival horror linear formatted game with puzzle and platforming elements and complex AI to enhance the horror experience. Plus zombie dragons. What more could you ask for?
