What I want from Halo: Infinite

By Alex Maidment (nSanity Beach)

This is going to be short and sweet as what I want from the new Halo game coming next year is pretty simple…

Firstly, let me begin by saying that the Halo series of games are fantastic! They’re not for everyone but for those like me that have long been playing Halo, they are just great fun, challenging and at times, hugely frustrating. There aren’t many games that I truly get invested in when playing, but Halo is one of them.

The last game in the series, Halo 5: Guardians took a slightly different direction from the games before it, with a campaign split between two protagonists, one of which was hunting the other. The multiplayer experience was also different adding intros and endings that made it feel like a real sport. Seeing your team at the beginning of each online game just reminds you that you’re playing for the team, not just yourself. Warzone was also added as a large scale online battle mode – it’s a great game mode allowing you to try out different weapons and vehicles, although shamefully, it’s my least played game mode online.

So, onward and upwards towards the new Halo game, Halo: Infinite, being released around the same time as the upcoming Xbox console, we still have over a year to wait for the game, but that doesn’t stop me wanting a wishlist!

Let’s start with the look and feel – with Halo 5 being the first proper Xbox One Halo game (I’m not counting The Master Chief Collection!), it stepped up the visuals and performance to match the power of the console – the new game has to go beyond this, especially with it launching on PC as well. I can only hope for silky smooth gameplay with 4K textures supported from the off.

Hopefully the new game with make full use of the beastly machines and PCs coming our way and offer some beautiful maps, levels and general surroundings. I also want to be able to see every scratch, dent and mark that Master Chief receives during the campaign (providing it is John-117 that we play as?).

The campaign needs to be great. It’s been a long time since Halo 5 launched and the new game, Halo: Infinite, needs to grab my attention from the second I load up the first level. I want to be thrilled, challenged and amazed by what the new story has to offer. It should also answer any key questions from the end of Halo 5 and fill in the gaps of what has been going on since Halo 5.

The multiplayer is simple for me. I just want a relatively serious, competitive team-based multiplayer that doesn’t involve ridiculous gestures and outfits. I want to see the return all of the fan-favourite game modes, including my own, Swat! The multiplayer arenas need to keep the complexity of some of the past maps with different levels, hidden areas and cheeky paths around the maps.

Basically, I just want Halo to be Halo and I want it to keep playing well for as long as they keep making the game! I seriously can’t wait to see what Halo: Infinite has in store for us all next year!

In the meantime, Halo: The Master Chief Collection is launching on PC, so that’s exciting.
